Frequently Asked Questions

Are neuromodulators safe?

Yes, very! Neuromodulators are wrinkle relaxing injections of botulinum toxin. They have been used extensively for years in both the medical and aesthetic setting and have a great safety record with no downtime (less than 24hrs until you can resume your normal lifestyle and activities) and very rare hypersensitivity reactions. There are no permanent lasting effects from neuromodulators (negative or positive).

Potential complications

Everyone’s face is unique and has some asymmetry despite the same underlying muscle structures. Your injector will get to know your requirements over time. It is better to under than overtreat as you can always add more product, but cannot remove it once injected. Should you have an unfortunate and rare result such as an eye lid droop – it will go away when the product wears off. Annoying but everything will go back to normal.

Who should not have neuromodulators?

We advise against having neuromodulators if pregnant or breastfeeding. People with sensitivities to any of the products used should not have any treatment. You cannot have neuromodulators if you suffer from pre-existing medical conditions that cause muscle weakness such as MND, Myasthenia Gravis, or have active skin infections at the injection site such as herpes zoster (shingles/cold sores).

Certain medications that enhance the effects of botulinum toxin should be avoided. These medications include tetracycline antibiotics and aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Blood thinners — including aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin and eg rivaroxaban — increase the risk of significant bruising from injection sites. Fish oils can also sometimes increase the risk of mild bleeding and/or bruising.

How long does the procedure take?

Most procedures will take less than 5-10minutes for the actual treatment administration. I am happy to explain any queries you have for however long it takes.

Why do you encourage me to take before and after photos?

This is for several reasons. It can show up minor flaws you may not have previously been aware of, once you have fewer or no wrinkles to distract you. It also gives us an indication at the two week review as to whether you require a top up or whether the dosing was adequate. This can guide your treatment at the next visit, as well as what you liked or maybe didn't.

Why do you advise review after 2 weeks?

It is considered good practice to review all patients 2 weeks after treatment. It allows me to learn from my work and I will gain an understanding of what works best for you and we can document this for future use. These appointments are free of charge, unless a small top up is required, which is up to you whether to have or not.

Is my data secure?

Yes, absolutely. The software Nova Aesthetic uses has been approved by the medical regulators in both Australia and the UK and has been designed specifically for medical clinics. Your confidentiality is ensured throughout your dealings with Nova Aesthetic. Medicolegally, we are required to hold your records for 7 years.

Why do I have to forfeit my deposit if I cancel late?

Neuromodulators come in vials of 50 or 100 units. Once a vial has been opened and the solution made up, it has a short time frame in which it has to be used. If I prepare my clinic according to the bookings made and clients then fail to turn up, I have to throw away $100s worth of product.

Is there parking at your clinic?

Yes, there is free and easy parking available right outside the front door.

Why can I only book through your website?

My Aesthetic Clinics are run separately to my GP practice, although I use the same site/room They use a different online booking system. Just let the medical reception staff know when you have arrived however as you would for a normal GP appointment.

Are you on Social Media?

No. I am a full time Medical Doctor and my life is busy enough. Also, so many things on social media have been photoshopped and are not a true reflection of reality.

Do you offer Dermal Fillers?

No. We now know that dermal fillers are permanent. This does not sit comfortably with me. But newer and better products are always emerging, so this may change.

Is there an age limit?

Yes, I request patients are aged 18+ please and have the capacity to make informed decisions about their treatments.  There is no upper age limit.

Who will carry out my treatment?

All consultations and treatments are carried out by myself.

What if I have problems or concerns following any treatments?

In the unlikely event that you require to contact me as a result of your treatment I can be contacted through the medical reception team at Craigie Medical Centre most days. I will get back to you as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours max.
